The sale of snuff is prohibited in all EU countries except Sweden.
EU Commission suggests tightening the taxation of snuff so that the price of snuff in Sweden would more than double. About that news based on the commission’s secret proposal obtained by the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
If the proposal were to go through as it is, according to Aftonbladet, the price of a bag snuff box would increase due to taxes by about 34 kroons, or about 3.10 euros, and the price of a loose snuff box by about 62 kroons, or about 5.70 euros.
Nowadays, you can get pouch snuff boxes for about 30 kroner, or about 2.80 euros, and loose snuff boxes for about 50 kroner, or about 4.60 euros, in multipacks clearly even cheaper.
“Imagine if the EU decided to increase the taxation of Italian Parma ham and German beer. It’s practically the same thing,” the communications manager of market leader Swedish Match Patrik Hildingsson commented to Aftonbladet.
I sniff the sale is prohibited in all EU countries, except for Sweden, which was given freedom to differ during the membership negotiations. Snuff bought in Sweden may be brought to Finland for the buyer’s personal use.
According to Aftonbladet, the EU Commission is about to announce its proposal on reforming the taxation of tobacco products in December, after which the member states will discuss the matter before making a decision.
