There is less to go before another PSOE candidate for mayor of Madrid appears. Meanwhile, you have to fill talk shows, newspaper pages and make pools. The story of presenter Jorge Javier Vázquez as a candidate for mayor of the Spanish capital has been a cocktail of irony, hoaxes and diffuse information. It began at 8:30 am on Wednesday on Onda Cero and was denied on Thursday at 7:06 pm on Telecinco. During those 36 hours, false electoral posters were also published with the image of the presenter in Ferraz, more than 15 news items were generated in different media -including sports-, and “Jorge Javier” was one of the 10 most commented topics on Twitter. That’s how it all started:
First hour of Wednesday in a radio talk show. Journalist Carlos Alsina opens this section of his program More than one commenting, among other information, one of The confidential entitled: “Sánchez’s plan for the comeback: a more aggressive spokesman and a star for Madrid”. Alsina, with the ironic tone that characterizes him, says: “Pepu II we could call the covered one. Who will be covered and the candidate for Madrid? No one is going to take me seriously, but I would bet on Jorge Javier Vázquez, who would gain in political commitment, but he would lose a lot of money. In addition, the electoral slogan has it done: Save me”.
24 hours later, Alsina returns to her old days in her social gathering with the name of the PSOE candidate: “If you want, we’ll do a cheer. I try to make it Jorge Javier … ”, he reminded the crowd. More names appear on the table: the mayor Marta Higueras, the former mayor Manuela Carmena, the minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska… Even the spokesman for the Ministry of Health in the pandemic, Fernando Simón. Pools. Alsina insists on his ironic bet: “Jorge Javier is a star, isn’t he?” That’s when one of the journalists at the table slips: “They just told me that we are not paying enough attention to you with Jorge Javier.” Alsina, surprised, asks: “Who wrote it to you?” The journalist replies: “I can’t tell you.” And it is insisted that Jorge Javier Vázquez campaigned for the socialist Ángel Gabilondo in the last elections to the Community of Madrid and that his future at Telecinco “is not very clear.” The wick, which in theory was a morning joke, begins to dress up as news.
The name of “Jorge Javier” begins to grow on Twitter, a social network full of journalists. One of the first messages broadcast that the Mediaset presenter could be the PSOE candidate for mayor is @casasola89, a profile that has 32,000 followers and is mainly dedicated to telling news and television audience data. The tweet is from 2:23 p.m.: “Jorge Javier Vázquez, possible candidate for the PSOE in Madrid (via @More than one). Carlos Alsina: ‘They tell me that we are not paying enough attention to Jorge Javier. It is known that he has campaigned for Gabilondo asking for the vote for him… I would encourage the campaign a lot.’” The phrase was not from Alsina, but a mixture of the journalist’s ironies with the phrase of one of the collaborators, but the bomb was already dropped. In a matter of minutes, the message reaches hundreds of interactions.
About 20 minutes later, the Electomanía Twitter account shoots: “Rumors are growing about a possible candidacy of Jorge Javier Vázquez (Sálvame) for mayor of Madrid by the PSOE. Today [por el jueves] in the program More than one Onda Cero have commented on it. Socialist coup in the capital? Electomanía is a website that is characterized by disseminating electoral polls and political news. It has more than 115,000 followers. The message of this profile is launched at 2:40 p.m. and is accompanied by a video of Vázquez with the PSOE logo. Accumulate thousands of comments, shares and interactions in a matter of hours. The rumor begins to have more news overtones as it is not denied by the PSOE in the same network.

This message from Electomania it also reaches the councilors and deputies of the region’s party. Some of them openly admit that they really believed it. “It came to me because of a tweet from Electomania,” a high-ranking PSOE official in Madrid tells by phone. “The worst thing is that I believed it. My opinion with this of the candidate is that he is not managing himself well. Expectations are causing everything to be true. It is necessary to say the name now to avoid precisely this and that the expectations among the citizens are not frustrated”. What did the PSOE say about the uproar that was being mounted on the network around the candidacy of Jorge Javier Vázquez? “He will answer this afternoon live”, they answered in the socialist party of Madrid, a response that further fueled the idea that there was news.
To this is added that Vázquez himself entered the rag in the program La Tarda de Catalunya Radio ―where he collaborates on Thursdays before starting Save me― and left listeners in suspense, quoting everyone to see Telecinco: “We could say that the buzz is around the town and court”, he said. “Carlos Alsina has uncovered that they have proposed to me to go as mayor for the PSOE. I can not say anything more. […] I can’t confirm or deny anything. I will announce it in Save me […] my CEO [en referencia a la salida de Paolo Vasile de la cadena] leaves Spain and we don’t know what can happen to my program. I’m serious. When a new manager comes to a company you have to be prepared for everything. For him to like it, for him not to like it…”. The Twitter account of the Catalunya Radio program concludes: “LAST MINUTE: Jorge Javier does not rule out being the socialist candidate for mayor of the Spanish capital.”
Save me It started at 4:00 p.m., but the presenter did not speak until 7:06 p.m. During these three hours, more than a dozen news items were published: “Is Jorge Javier the PSOE candidate?” “Jorge Javier, possible PSOE candidate”. “Jorge Javier enters the pools of the PSOE”. Different Twitter accounts also fed the hoax that Ferraz’s headquarters had already posted a poster with the image of the presenter as a candidate. Finally, the presenter gives his version after seven in the afternoon. A key hour, marked, above all, by the daily duel between Telecinco and Antena 3 for the afternoon audiences and which has intensified even more in the last 10 days due to the new Sonsoles Ónega program on Antena 3, which begins precisely at 7:00 p.m. “Because of the love I have for my city and because politics is everywhere…”, Vázquez said in Save me. “I solemnly swear that I have not received a proposal to be a candidate for mayor of the PSOE. If they proposed it to me, I would not accept it under any circumstances. In other words… Carlos Alsina, I have to deny you. I have nothing else to say”. End of news.
Consulted by this newspaper, the presenter says by phone that everything has already been said and that right now he is focused on the presentation of his new book before oblivion, which goes on sale Wednesday. The PSOE candidate for the Community of Madrid, Juan Lobato, also entered the rag after 10 p.m. on Thursday on his Twitter account due to the commotion caused during the day: “The love for the city of Madrid and the trust in politics are two great qualities that our future mayor or mayor will also have. Thank you for this moment, Jorge Javier.” The candidate for mayor of the PSOE, until further notice, will continue to be a daily pool. Will it be Paolo Vasile?
