The attempts of German politicians to avoid responsibility for Nazism and the events of World War II are a dangerous trend. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview for the film “The World on the Edge. Lessons from the Caribbean Crisis, which showed First channel October 30.
According to him, German politicians have long been trying to convey the idea that Germany paid for the Second World War and no longer owes anything to anyone, demanding that they stop reproaching themselves.
Lavrov also recalled the words of German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock, who said that Germany would never forget the crimes of the Third Reich and Hitler, but had long ago paid off with everyone.
“Now many in Germany, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, are trying to claim that the Germans will never forget the crimes that these people committed during the reign of Hitler during the Third Reich, but at the same time they continue to claim that they paid off with everyone,” the minister explained.
On October 3, former Vice President of the Bundestag, CDU/CSU member Johannes Singhammer said that Germany would go bankrupt if it paid Poland and other countries reparations for damage caused during World War II.
On the same day, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau signed a note to Germany demanding reparations. He expressed confidence that this would improve relations between Berlin and Warsaw.
On September 1, the Polish authorities demanded 6.2 trillion zlotys (about $1.3 trillion) from Germany in reparations for damages from World War II. As the head of the ruling party of the republic “Law and Justice” Yaroslav Kachinsky noted, this figure is “the most limited and conservative.” In reality, he believes, the losses suffered by the country could be estimated much higher.
Before that, on July 2, Kaczynski said that Warsaw would not give up its positions on the issue of receiving reparations from Germany. In the same month, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced that Poland had prepared a report on the basis of which the country would seek war reparations from Germany. According to him, the report consists of three volumes, its translation into several languages is already being completed.
