Nfter a newspaper report of several cases of sexual harassment, the British Navy has ordered an investigation. “These allegations are abhorrent,” said Royal Navy Chief of Staff Ben Key. According to information from the “Daily Mail” (Saturday), several women on board submarines are said to have been sexistically insulted and sexually harassed. Officers on board a boat are said to have compiled a “rape list” in the event of an underwater disaster.
Former Lieutenant Sophie Brook told the paper: “The best thing I’ve ever done is to leave the Navy. But I worry about the women I left behind. There was a constant campaign of sexual bullying.” The Navy was a “hostile and misogynistic place.” An anonymous whistleblower, who the Daily Mail said had served in a senior position in the fleet, also reported regular sexual harassment.
The Department of Defense confirmed that some Navy members — particularly women — have experienced inappropriate sexualized behavior from their comrades. More needs to be done to prevent this.
