But soon it will be over. The Allgäu native will no longer stand as a candidate in the 2023 Bavarian state elections in autumn next year.

The CSU parliamentary group leader will retire from the Maximilianeum next year. According to party information, Kreuzer announced on Monday evening (October 24) in the district executive of the CSU in his hometown of Kempten that he would no longer be a candidate in the 2023 state election. The 63-year-old therefore gave personal reasons for his decision to say goodbye to day-to-day political business in Munich.

Kreuzer has been head of the CSU parliamentary group for nine years now. Before that, he was Head of the State Chancellery under the then Prime Minister Seehofer from 2011 to 2013 – also working in the power center of the Christian Socialists. Since 1994, Kreuzer has been a directly elected member of the Kempten-Oberallgäu constituency in the state parliament. In the 2018 state elections, he defended the mandate with 34.2 percent of the votes.
“Although many in my constituency wanted to persuade me to run again and the district executive of the CSU-Kempten would have welcomed it, I decided not to run again. I have been a member of the state parliament for 29 years, and by the end of the next legislature I would be over 69 years old,” said Kreuzer, explaining the move on Tuesday.

Kreuzer went on to explain: “Therefore I wanted to set the course for a new start in my constituency in good time. In my personal life planning, I would like to set other priorities after the end of this election period in autumn 2023 and also have time for private life. I look forward to leading the parliamentary group with full force into the 2023 election year and to continuing to get Bavaria through these difficult times.”
