The European Parliament has published an important document which is a call for reflection but also indicates measures to mitigate unwanted effects
Artificial intelligence in healthcare. Applications, risks, ethics and social impact, a report published in June 2022 by the European Parliament. AI could make many important contributions. In the context of clinical practice
there are successful experiences in radiology, cardiology, digital pathology, emergency medicine, surgery, clinical risk and disease prediction, adaptive interventions for home care and mental health.
Minimize the dangers
The report also presents the main clinical, social and ethical risks posed by AI in healthcare: potential errors and consequent harm to patientspartiality in care and increased health inequalities, lack of transparency and consequently little trust in the system by health professionals and citizens, vulnerability to hacking
and data privacy violations. The study proposes mitigation measures and policy options to minimize these risks and maximize the benefits of AI in health systems: the involvement of all stakeholders in the AI production cycletransparency and traceability, in-depth clinical validation and AI training and education for both doctors and citizens.
