An armed man killed five people on Friday, including an off-duty police officer, in Raleigh, in the southeastern United States, the mayor of this city announced at night.
Several people were also injured and the shooter is still on the run but “surrounded”, according to the authorities of this North Carolina municipality at a press conference.
“Around 8:00 p.m. (00:00 GMT on Friday, ndlr), Raleigh police said they surrounded the suspect at a residence in the area,” said Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin, lamenting “a sad and tragic day.”
Among the injured, whose number is unknown at the moment, is a police officer from the canine unit who is out of danger of death, according to Baldwin.
Some 49,000 people were killed with firearms in 2021 in the country, against 45,000 in 2020, which was already a record. The equivalent of 130 daily deaths, half suicides.
