The landslide happened over the weekend in the small town of Las Tejerias in the central part of the country, where a month’s worth of rain fell in just eight hours.
in Venezuela the number of victims of the weekend’s landslide may rise to nearly a hundred. The president of the country Nicolás Maduro said on TV that 36 bodies have been found so far and more than 50 people are still missing.
Ordinary people as well as thousands of policemen, soldiers and other professionals have participated in the rescue work. Hopes of finding survivors in the aftermath of the weekend’s landslide have faded, and the mud spread by the landslide is hardening quickly.
The landslide occurred in the central part of the country in the small town of Las Tejerias, where heavy rains caused the river to overflow its banks. Vice president Delcy Rodriguez has said that a month’s worth of rain fell in the area in just eight hours.
The landslide destroyed and damaged homes and business premises as well as telephone lines, felled huge trees and took cars with it.
According to the anonymous official source of the news agency AFP, many victims had died after being hit by a tree trunk, a large rock or another large object that had traveled with the water. Some of the victims died of hypothermia.
The experts according to the storm was worsened by the prevailing La Niña phenomenon in the region and hurricane Julia, which caused deaths in Central America.
Crisis-ridden Venezuela is used to seasonal storms. The storm that hit now was the worst of the current year, and it was preceded by historically heavy rains, in which dozens of people have also died in recent months.
President Maduro visited Las Tejerias on Monday and vowed to rebuild every single destroyed home and business. According to him, Las Tejerias will “rise like a phoenix” and be reborn.
The authorities have set up centers for those who lost their homes and announced that they will distribute 300 tons of food.
