Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be out later this month, but there’s a surprise that many potential players didn’t see coming.
According to a page on Battle.net, Modern Warfare 2 players will need to provide a phone number linked to a valid data plan. Also, VOIP and prepaid numbers will not work.
This decision is apparently part of a company-wide initiative by Activision Blizzard to combat toxic behavior in its multiplayer games.
We already saw the policy in action last week at the launch of Overwatch 2which has led to numerous controversies.
In theory, this requirement will prevent players from creating new accounts, hoping to curb anyone who prevents a pleasant gaming experience.
However, limiting VOIP and prepaid numbers might prevent hackers from re-entering the system, but it also has the unfortunate side effect of preventing people who rely on such services from playing the game completely.
Also, as prepaid phones are often cheaper than the competition, this policy definitely affects poor and disadvantaged people, as well as children too young to own their own phones.
Activision Blizzard has announced that it will renounce the telephone policy for those who have playedOriginal Overwatch and have a linked Battle.net account. However, new users still need to provide a phone number.
