“This is the beginning of a path that we will gradually travel with the five remaining foundations to bring them closer institutionally to the ministries with which they are linked thematically“, he explained.
The step taken this Tuesday “responds to an institutional innovation, a reflection of the commitment to probity and new ways of doing politics,” said the president Gabriel Boric.

Will Chile no longer have a first lady?
Karamanos announced that she will step down as first lady before the end of this year. “During the campaign we committed ourselves from the government to transform the role of first lady. I took on this task with a lot of responsibility and conviction, since March presiding over the directories of the six Presidency foundations,” he wrote on his Twitter account.
As he explained later in a press conference, in the case of the Integra Foundation, for example, “it will be the Minister of Education who appoints a new president, according to criteria of professional suitability and with experience in the sector.” And so it will eventually happen with the other foundations.

Nevertheless, the government’s plan does not consist of the foundations passing into the hands of a ministry but that, before the end of the year, change the position of chairman of the board of directors of each of the foundations. In other words, that responsibility no longer falls on the first lady.

“The institutional role of the first lady would end with these institutional modifications,” explained Karamanos, who also said that “this transition stage will involve closeness, dedication and accompaniment, for which I will be mainly in the premises of the Foundations and I will stop using the palace as an office. In this way, we will strengthen the processes already started together.”
On the other hand, the 32-year-old social scientist made it clear: “This process does not change the fact that I am a partner and partner of the president (Gabriel Boric) and, moreover, a militant of a project.”

The 32-year-old social scientist divided Chilean feminism when she announced last March that, despite her initial refusal, she would assume the position of first lady of Chile, in order “to reformulate it from within.”
In addition to directing the six social foundations, Karamanos participates in protocol activitiesincluding accompanying President Boric on a recent tour of the United States.

“All the activities that she has as president of the foundations is what she is going to stop doing, but she continues and maintains her activities exactly the same as the president’s partner,” he explained to the AFP the press office of
Karamans.
The position of first lady is not regulated in Chile. Traditionally he does not receive remuneration but manages a millionaire budget and has an office in the presidential palace of La Moneda.
Boric’s partner since 2019, of Greek and German descent, Karamanos studied at the University of Heidelberg, in Germany, and is part of the Feminist Front of the ruling Social Convergence party.
