Gazprom may increase supplies to China in the future, Igbal Guliyev, deputy director of the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy at MGIMO, suggested, commenting on the information about the resumption of gas exports from Russia via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. He told Izvestia about this on September 30.
“In the context of the “new normal” and the turn to the East of Russian energy diplomacy, Gazprom, in my opinion, will increase supplies to China,” he said.
As the expert noted, the Russian side expects that the volume of deliveries through the Power of Siberia in 2022 will be 20 billion cubic meters. m, while since the beginning of the year the growth was already 60%. The project should reach its design capacity in 2024, Guliyev added.
“The growth in supplies through the Power of Siberia is facilitated by the reduction in supplies to Europe and the fact that at the end of this year gas will begin to flow into the system from the Kovykta field in the Irkutsk region,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Russian energy giant Gazprom reported that gas supplies to China via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline had resumed after scheduled work had been completed. Transportation was suspended on 22 September.
Oleg Aksyutin, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Gazprom, said on September 15 that China is increasing applications for gas supplies through the Power of Siberia even in the face of a slowdown in domestic demand for it. On the same day, it became known that on September 10, the company set a new historical record for the daily volume of gas exports to China via the gas pipeline.
