With the adoption by the European Union (EU) of the eighth package of anti-Russian sanctions, among other things, the import of a number of household goods will be restricted. On Wednesday, September 28, the newspaper reported Politico.
It is noted that the ban will affect, in particular, the export of cosmetics, soap and toilet paper from the Russian Federation.
In addition, the new restriction project will affect the supply of electronic and aircraft components, as well as chips, abroad.
Innovations can spread to the service sector. Thus, it provides for a ban on “provision of architectural and engineering services, legal advice and advice in the field of information technology” to citizens, companies from the Russian Federation or the Russian government.
The EU plans to impose additional sanctions on the sale by Russia of certain types of steel products, precious stones and metals. At the same time, diamonds are not included in the “black list”.
Earlier on Wednesday, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the completion of work on new proposals for sanctions against Russia in connection with the referendums in the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (LPR and DPR), Kherson and Zaporozhye regions on joining the Russian Federation.
Due to the new measures, it is planned to further reduce the revenues of the Russian Federation by €7 billion. As von der Leyen added, the EC is currently preparing a legislative framework to limit prices for Russian oil in the future.
On September 24, information appeared that, as part of the sanctions policy, the EU may ban the export of a number of goods to Russia, for example, smartphones, radar equipment and laser equipment, as well as limit the provision of IT services to Russian clients. The EU also proposed to consider the possibility of an embargo on the import of cash banknotes from Europe and the United States to the Russian Federation, the sale of real estate to Russians and the financing of lobbying firms or non-governmental organizations that were registered in the EU.
The day before, the Politico newspaper reported that the EU did not include restrictions on the trade in diamonds from Russia in the sanctions list due to lobbying by Belgian diplomats. As later noted in the publication, this decision should “please Belgium.”
Western countries began to tighten sanctions against Russia in response to Moscow’s special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. The situation in the region escalated significantly in mid-February due to shelling by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
