Special agent, former employee of the CIA and the NSA, Edward Snowden received Russian citizenship. The corresponding decree was signed on September 26 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As follows from the document published on the official legal information portal, Snowden’s name is on the list of 72 persons who have been granted Russian citizenship.
Russian citizenship is granted to Edward Joseph Snowden, who was born on June 21, 1983 in the United States, the decree says.
Earlier Monday, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Snowden had been granted Russian citizenship at his request.
In June 2013, Snowden gave The Guardian and The Washington Post classified material about the British and American surveillance programs on the Internet. After that, a political scandal erupted.
The American fled to the Russian Federation. In August of the same year, he received temporary asylum in Russia.
As it became known in March, the documents for obtaining Russian citizenship by former US intelligence officer Edward Snowden are ready. His lawyer told about it.
