The spread of the electric mobility passes through the batteries and in Italy as far as research and development is concerned, it wants to have a leading role through the project Gigagreenled by the Polytechnic of Turin and financed byEuropean Union. The initiative is part of the research and innovation program Horizon Europe, with the aim of developing sustainable and safe battery cell manufacturing processes.
Gigafactory Gigagreen
For 48 months Gigagreen, formed by 16 other partners from 8 different European countries. In addition to the Polytechnic there are also Sustainable Innovations, ABEE, Solvionic, Leclanche, Nanomakers, University of Parma, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Sintef, Inegi Porto, Cic Energigune, Arlanxeo, Alphanov, Manz Italy, CETIM and Johnson Matthey.
All together they will work to achieve the sustainable gigafactory of the future, placing Europe at the forefront of the global market in the value chain of lithium-ion batteries, critical for the next generation of electric vehicles. Gigagreen is also one of the many projects of the partnership Batt4EU who work for the creation of an EU research and development landscape, capable of generating effective synergies among the players in the battery market and to contribute to the transfer of cell production from Asia to Europe.
Gigafactory training
The Electrochemistry group of the Politecnico di Torino coordinates the project for the development of the gigafactroy of the future by exploiting its pilot line to create some small prototypes in addition to characterization and testing.
The Polytechnic of Turin is in fact the first Italian university to have a small pilot line useful for development of lithium-ion cell production lines which are used in European gigafactories. In addition, this line will also support the training of new professional figures so requested at European level: in fact, according to the latest estimates they will be necessary 800,000 new workers in the field.
To respond to this need for training, the Polytechnic of Turin has devised an ad hoc path on energy storage with specific training courses.
Gigafactory of the future
The gigafactory of the future project proposes a structured research plan to develop and scale new production processes of electrodes and cell components which follow an approach Design to Manufacture (DtM). In summary, Gigagreen will represent a game changer for the EU cell manufacturing industry, as its findings are believed to contribute to a smooth transition between current processing methods and the lithium-ion cell factory of the futurebased on greener, cheaper, safer, better, cleaner, digitized and flexible technologies.
Thanks to the progress made by Gigagreen, the EU industry will be able to quickly use the results related to water processing and dryafter 2026, in order to immediately improve the performance and competitiveness of the industry thanks to materials designed and improved to function and to be processed in such conditions, and to pave the way towards the techniques of processing of dry electrodes as the next technological revolution in lithium ion production.
New jobs in the gigafactories of the future
Increasing the innovation capacity of the EU cell battery value chain, thanks to the adoption of water-based and dry electrodes, can position European gigafactories at the forefront of the global marketthanks to the added value brought by the DtM principles, thus attracting new investments e generating jobs.
Currently, the global production capacity of cells is 60 GWhmainly in Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea. As the market demand for electric vehicle batteries increases, it is expected to significantly increase over time up to 247 GWh in 2054. For this reason cell production capacity has to keep up and it is estimated that Europe could acquire 250 billion euros per year by 2025 if it quickly and effectively developed a successful cell manufacturing industry from scratch.
