The Ukrainian authorities said that the Ukrainian forces regained control of more than 20 sites during the past 24 hours, in light of their continued rapid progress towards the east.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said in a report that the position of “the liberation of Russian-controlled areas in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions continues.”
The report of the commission stated that the Russian forces had left the regions of Velikia Borluk and Voryshna, which are located in the north of the Kharkiv region.
Under the pressure of Ukrainian counter-attacks, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the withdrawal of its forces from Kharkiv at the weekend, more than half a year after the start of the offensive.
The ministry attributed the reason for the withdrawal to a strategic “regroupment” of the units.
On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the strategically important town of Izyum had been recaptured.
Videos showed Ukrainian soldiers raising the national flag.
“With the Ukrainian advance, it is likely that Russia has ordered its soldiers to withdraw from the entire Kharkiv Oblast west of the Oskil River,” a British Defense Intelligence report said on Monday.
“There are still isolated pockets of resistance, but since Wednesday Ukraine has regained control of an area roughly twice the size of Greater London,” the report added.
Despite the apparent success of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov appeared to focus on Moscow’s position on Monday, stressing that Russia would continue its “special military operation” until its goals were achieved, according to the Interfax news agency.
