Sahra Wagenknecht earns applause from the AfD for a Russia speech – and a lot of outrage. First left demand the exclusion from the parliamentary group.
Munich/Berlin – “Enough!”: With an open letter under this title, three East German members of the state parliament of the left demanded the exclusion of Sahra Wagenknecht from the parliamentary group of the party. The reason for this is Wagenknecht’s controversial speech on the traffic light government’s Russia policy in the German Bundestag. The MPs Katharina König-Preuss, Henriette Quade and Juliane Nagel are also calling for the resignation of the parliamentary group leaders Dietmar Bartsch and Amira Mohamed Ali.
Sahra Wagenknecht: Left-wing politician polarized with “economic war” speech in the Bundestag
Wagenknecht had called for the end of sanctions against Russia and the resignation of Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) in the Bundestag – in a drastic choice of words. “We have the stupidest government in Europe,” Wagenknecht fumed in her speech, adding: “Unfortunately, unlike in companies, a minister who no longer delivers does not have to file for bankruptcy.”
Millions of people are afraid of the future, the left-wing MP said on Thursday (September 8th). The blame lies with the government and its “complete lack of spine in the face of the skimmers”. Wagenknecht referred to France. “A liter of fuel costs 40 cents less there than in Germany,” said the 53-year-old. “If we don’t stop energy prices, the German economy will soon be history.” Germany needs Russian raw materials if it wants to remain an industrialized country, she said you. It was “stupid” to start an economic war against the most important energy suppliers. What was meant was Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
In view of the behavior of Sahra Wagenknecht and her faithful, the limit of what is bearable has long been reached.
Wagenknecht speech in the Bundestag: open letter and open anger on the left follows
Her speech polarized far beyond Parliament. König-Preuss, who sits in the state parliament of Thuringia, the Saxon state parliament member Quade and Nagel from the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt reacted with their open letter. “Instead of communicating our political demands for redistribution and social justice, (…) Putin was played into the hands and speaking time wasted on right-wing populist platitudes,” they write.
The decision of the parliamentary group executive to let Wagenknecht speak was not only negligent, “it also damages our party to a great extent. The action of the parliamentary group at central points of the political debate does not make our problems smaller, but bigger,” it continues: “First and foremost Sahra Wagenknecht with her demand for the lifting of all sanctions and her politically fatal wording, which includes a perpetrator-victim reversal .” The limit of what is tolerable has long been reached “in view of the behavior of Sahra Wagenknecht and her faithful,” they explained and published the letter on Twitter.

The topic is explosive. After Wagenknecht’s “economic war” speech, chairmen Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan called for unity and warned of a split in the party. “We have a responsibility, not just for us as a party, but for millions of people who voted for us,” Wissler said on Sunday after a federal executive board meeting in Rathenow. The left is a historic achievement. “That’s why I appeal to everyone not to jeopardize this historic project,” she said. She did not specifically criticize Wagenknecht.
Die Linke: Chairmen Wissler and Schirdewan call for unity – Wagenknecht polarizes
Wagenknecht recently came under criticism from within the party. After the much-debated speech, she was uninvited for a planned speech at a Monday demo on September 5 in Leipzig. Since the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the German government had decided on a series of sanctions against Moscow, which Wagenknecht repeatedly criticized. (pm)
