In Germany, motorists swallow when looking at the fuel prices after the end of the tank discount. Some neighboring countries have it better. But also in Austria petrol will soon become more expensive.
Munich – With the end of the tank discount a week ago, fuel prices under two euros per liter are also history in Germany for the time being. Or at least the exception. Because now the energy crisis is hitting the pumps again. Blessed are those who live or work near the border and can fill up the car in neighboring countries without having to make long detours.
Diesel or super: refueling in Austria is so cheap
For Bavaria, this primarily means: Austria or the Czech Republic. However: In the summer, fuel prices in the Alpine Republic were sometimes even higher than in Germany. According to the ÖAMTC – i.e. the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club – an average of 1.95 euros for diesel and 1.73 euros for Super are currently being called up there. For comparison. For Germany, the ADAC shows 2.15 euros for diesel and 1.99 euros for Super E10, the cheaper Super version.
Fuel prices in Germany: ADAC criticizes the sudden increase after the end of the tank discount
A short trip across the border can be worthwhile. In any case, the ADAC criticized the mineral oil companies because they had already raised prices significantly in the second half of August. So still at the time of the tank discount. The aim was probably “to get an adequate price cushion”. Germany’s largest automobile club, which represents more than 21 million people, also complained “that prices suddenly rose at the turn of the month, although a gradual increase would have been expected in view of the even lower taxed fuel reserves in the gas station tanks”.
However, experts also expect a jump in prices in Austria. So reported today.at, “in less than a month” would be required for diesel and super “nine or eight cents” more per liter. Martin Grasslober, transport economics expert at the ÖAMTC, suspects “diesel prices of just over two euros again in October due to the additional Co2 pricing”.
The so-called Co2 tax is considered the core of the eco-social tax reform in Austria from October 2021. The original plan envisaged calling up 30 euros per tonne for CO2 emissions from July 2022. The price increase was postponed to October as part of a relief package. Austria would not yet have German conditions at the petrol pumps, but the drivers would still face a significant additional burden.

Tank tourism in Austria? Co2 tax ensures higher prices – experts warn of cost burdens
the auto revue even writes: “If the manufacturers pass on the price directly to the consumers, 20 percent VAT is added – that corresponds to a total of 36 euros per tonne of Co2.” Since the Co2 price is to be increased year after year, this alone would the price of petrol will increase by 14.1 cents per liter by 2025 compared to the current level, and that of diesel by 16.2 cents per liter.
ÖAMTC expert Grasslober is already warning: “The cost burden for consumers should not be pushed up any further.” In this way, the price spiral would not continue to spiral upwards.”
Refueling in Austria? Experts point to cheaper prices in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia
According to the ÖAMTC, fuel prices for diesel in Austria had already climbed to an unprecedented level in July. Accordingly, E-Control’s official fuel price database showed an average of EUR 2.02 for a liter of Super, and even EUR 2.03 for diesel. Within a year, Super had become 55 percent more expensive, and diesel even 64 percent. Or in absolute figures: A 50-liter tank filling was 40 euros more expensive in July 2022 than twelve months earlier.
The ÖAMTC also brings a price comparison with neighboring countries into play. The page says: “Due to price caps or tax cuts in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, refueling in these countries is definitely cheaper than in Austria. So if you’re heading south, you should stop for gas before you return.”
So it could well be that German motorists switch to Austria to fill up, while the citizens of the neighboring country prefer to quench the thirst of their vehicles in Italy. As severe as the energy crisis hits Europe, the consequences can be just as strange. (mg)
