After 70 years in office, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom passed away this Thursday, September 8, at her Balmoral residence. With the world interested and saddened by the monarch’s departure, comments on social networks about who will be her successor are immediate.
But the need for information about the English royal family is not new, and that was demonstrated when Netflix announced in 2016 that it would release “The crown”, the Peter Morgan series that investigates and exposes, from fiction, life and secrets about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
A resignation that marked the beginning of an era
Played by Claire Foy, in the first and second seasons of “The Crown”, the plot begins with Elizabeth’s wedding to Philip (Matt Smith) in 1947. After renouncing his titles, Philip of Edinburgh would be known, from 1953, as the prince and consort of the monarch, something that would be a constant problem in the royal couple. The queen obtained the throne after her uncle George VI resigned from office.
Fiction also lets us see little of English politics with the presence of Winston Churchill, a man who led the English in World War II, who enters the scene after being re-elected as Prime Minister.
A man in the shadow of the queen
For the second cycle, we see Felipe on his solo trip around the world representing the royal house. An alleged infidelity on the part of the prince slips, but this is not proven.
Likewise, it is exposed how the life of Charles of England begins to be directed by his parents so that one day he will be the king. On the other hand, Felipe’s childhood and his family are shown. Season 2 of “The crown” ends with an infidelity scandal that mobilized British society and with Felipe swearing eternal love to his wife.
Arrival of Diana of Wales
Olivia Colman (Seasons 3–4) enters “The Crown” to give Elizabeth of England a more mature image. Likewise, we see the family trying to pass one of its hardest moments: an increasingly anti-monarchical society.
The series introduces us to a new character, Princess Alice of Greece and Denmark, Philip’s mother, who lives in a sanatorium after being diagnosed with schizophrenia.
But perhaps one of the narrative milestones fans were hoping to see was how Lady Diana and Charles of England met. With Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin in the roles, viewers saw how the couple “love was born”, one that from the beginning was under the shadow of Camila Parker Bowl.
Season 4 of “The crown” shows us Diana Spencer trying to fit in with the royal family, one that is more concerned with appearing happy and smiling in front of the press and citizens than in fixing their personal problems.
With no turning back, the couple can no longer continue their relationship and the idea of divorcing gains more strength. A trip to New York would be the beginning of the good relationship between Diana of Wales and the public. This clearly did not please her husband. One of the hardest moments in history leads us to see how Lady Di, and if she forces herself to follow a lie, she falls into bulimia and depression.
Season 4 of “The crown” closes with Diana and Charles of England divorced in 1996. With public attention at its height on ‘the people’s princess’, the fifth cycle should take us to the life of the princess outside of the royal house and how his tragic death ended.
The royal family and “The crown”
“The crown” is no stranger to the English monarchy. In 2020, the Crown asked Netflix to warn the public that what is shown in the series is fiction and is not related to the family. This was not fulfilled.
On the other hand, who has spoken about the series openly is Henry of Sussex. In an interview with James Corden, the duke admitted to having seen the showthe same one that, in his opinion, offers an important window to the viewer of what it means to be a member of the royal house.
