To prevent people from having to sleep outside permanently at the application center for asylum seekers in Ter Apel, the cabinet agreed, among other things, that family members must wait much longer before being reunited with their families. But according to the Meijers Committee, the measures go against the rules that have been agreed at European level. The advisory body therefore expects that the Netherlands “will be called back if the proposed measures are actually implemented”.
The committee points out, for example, that under the new rules, refugees may soon have to wait 2.5 years for family reunification. Structural postponement of family reunification, especially when it comes to children, is contrary to the Family Reunification Directive and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the experts say. It states that the interests of minor children must be taken into account.
The House of Representatives will debate the asylum crisis on Thursday. There is also much dissatisfaction with the agreements within the coalition parties.
