Electric cars are at the center of the international debate, protagonists on the two faces of the energy transition and mobility. There are those who indicate them as the only solution to solve environmental problems and those who instead consider them a chimera, a decoy, unable to bring real benefits from the point of view of emissions until we move in a more organic way. . And then there are those who change their minds within a few days, like the Arpatthe regional agency for the protection of the environment of Tuscany that first pointed out the EVs as evil and then made a quick turnaround, stating that the electric “They have high energy efficiency, reduce costs and reduce CO2 emissions”.
A sudden change of perspective, after taking an initial position in which the path imposed by the European Commission was criticized for an end to the sale of petrol and diesel engines in 2035arguing that the choice of Brussels was not considered because it did not include an important aspect, namely that “In the production phases of electric vehicles, the necessary energy still comes for the most part from non-renewable sources, while still maintaining high carbon dioxide emissions”. A few days later and everything has changed or rather has been sweetened perhaps by the current electoral campaign, which has a central theme in sustainability and environmental protection with electric cars as a workhorse. Thus the vision of the forced advent of electrification has changed, as has the position towards the rules dictated by the EU. In the Arpat document we thus read that the choice “To fix 2035 has a clear and measurable goal to get out of the era of the internal combustion engine is not an ideological choice regardless of the risks, but a proactive vision”.
A choice, that of Brussels which therefore would not only affect mobility but would represent “a challenge, climatic, which requires overcoming the internal combustion engine in favor of the most efficient and cleanest technology available, the electric motor”. The transition to electric cars should therefore be “gradual but without delay”. The ARPAT then also underlines the presence of risks which, however, would be minorities in the pursuit of the objectives defined at European level.
