33% of Italians tend to have faith in the national government and 30% in parliament. Italians tend to trust the European Union more (46%)
The European Union is doing well in its response to the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The Italians have no doubts when they are asked about the twelve-star reaction. Nine out of ten (89%) believe it is right to have offered humanitarian support to the civilian population affected by the war right from the start, and the same number of people (86%) agree with having provided hospitality without “ifs” and without “but”. But … There is a but, and it concerns the country system. The latest Eurobarometer report carried out on behalf of the European Commission reveals a distrust of citizens-voters towards their institutions.
Twenty days before the elections, the opinions gathered in August sound an alarm bell. Only three out of ten Italians (33%) declare that they rely on the government and Parliament (30%). The rest tend not to trust. A cleavage between civil society and politics that risks having an impact on the vote of 25 September, starting with the turnout. The party of abstentionists, in light of the responses offered by the Italians interviewed, risks confirming once again the main force in the country.
The European Union is doing well on Ukraine, but not only. Because in the face of a disaffection for national institutions, the Italians confer greater reliability on the European Union. There are 46% of them who give credit to the EU, with a consensus that has grown by 1% compared to the survey previously. This too is a signal for Italian politics, especially the sovereign and euro-critical forces. A message therefore for the Brothers of Italy and the League, who in the EU Parliament to which Italians look with greater appreciation than the Chamber and Senate, sit in the camps that group forces in favor of less Europe for more national states.
It is true that 46% is not an absolute majority, but the Italian data on the degree of trust in the EU sees a similar share (46%) not in favor, and a small share (4%) that “does not know” . Therefore, while the Italians are clearly rejecting their own institutions and their own politics (3 against 7), there is a completely different situation regarding the EU.
In addition to a pro-European signal from the Italians for the center-right forces given the advantage in the polls, electricians and voters are already dictating the government program for the majority to come. Cost of living and economic situation are the main concerns. Less than three out of ten people (29%) believe that the Italian economic environment will improve in the coming months, and the optimist front has shrunk by 6%. The maneuver that will have to arrive in Brussels by the end of October will have to be able to regain the confidence of an Italy that no longer believes in its ruling class. Calendar in hand, there is no doubt that the budget law will be the first real test of the next executive.
