Among the several controversial episodes seen in the Dutch Grand Prix one involved a usually very correct driver like Sebastian Vettel. The German Aston Martin was sanctioned with a five-second penalty at the end of the game for not respecting the blue flags after exiting the pit lane following his stop to change tires. In fact, upon returning to the track, the four-time world champion found himself in the midst of a spectacular battle between Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez for third position.
The German came out of the pit lane too hastily, suddenly finding himself in front of the # 44 Mercedes, which even threatened to collide with him. The maneuver favored Perez, given that Hamilton found himself stuck for several consecutive corners, so much so that the Mexican tried to regain the previously lost position in the parabolic of curve 3, taking advantage of Vettel’s presence in front of his rival. Eventually Hamilton managed to keep his place on the track, but opened up via radio invoking the blue flags in order to make his way.
On the other hand, analyzing the radio communications between Vettel and his pit wall, it can be seen that the 35-year-old from Heppenheim was actually warned of the arrival of the two contenders. The attention of the former Ferrari driver’s track engineer – and probably also of the # 5 himself – was, however, directed above all to the position of Daniel Ricciardo, Seb’s direct rival at the time. This probably distracted the four-time world champion, who was therefore unable to get back on track without hindering Hamilton.
Aston Martin: “It will be pulled, you will find yourself in battle with Ricciardo and Schumacher. And probably Perez and Hamilton, who are blue flags for us. They are battling each other. They are coming close to you, Hamilton and Perez ”.
Aston: Martin: “You will be well ahead. Just watch out for Hamilton. You are well ahead of Ricciardo ”.
