It’s almost like sitting on the lap of the drivers, but without the back pain of the porposing. Also last weekend you could enjoy the helmet camera of Leclerc and Alonso. Of course, the Dutch fans wanted nothing more than a helmet camera from Max Verstappen – but unfortunately that was missing last weekend. As with all other races this year.
The helmet camera (also called helmet cam or visor cam called) is a new invention that made its debut last year. Just hanging a GoProotje with a suction cup from a helmet is not possible, so the system must first be developed and meet all safety requirements. Such a helmet is quite essential for safety.
That is why F1 decided to first develop the camera with one helmet supplier, namely with the Bell brand, the most popular among drivers. Max Verstappen drives with the Schuberth brand and no helmet camera has yet been developed for this. That’s why you haven’t seen a Max Verstappen helmet camera until now – and you won’t see it this year either.
Next year helmet camera with all drivers
“After testing the latest generation of helmet cameras at recent events, they have proven to be a great success and have generated significant positive feedback from fans as a valuable addition to GP coverage,” the FIA reported earlier this year.
“It was therefore proposed and unanimously approved to update the 2023 Technical Regulations, making the use of these helmet cameras mandatory for all drivers from 2023,” the statement continued. So next year we will see helmet cameras on all drivers – including Max Verstappen.
