For the past few weeks, the tennis world has focused its attention on Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam winner from the United States who is about to bring her tennis career to a close. Her announcement about her “transition” – the athlete does not like to talk about retirement – has left aside the absences of Novak Djokovic for not having a vaccination scheme against Covid-19 and Alexander Zverev, in process of recovery.
When Serena Williams steps onto the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center main court to face Montenegrin Danka Kovinić, in the main tournament time, every shot, every point and every set will be followed by a throng of fans around the world: They will be watching the last dance of one of the most outstanding players in the sport in recent years.
For her retirement, the youngest of the Williams sisters chose the framework of the US Open, a tournament she won in 1999 for the first time at the age of 17. This feat placed her as the fourth youngest to win the tournament and would mark a path that, with 40 years in tow, has allowed her to win 23 titles in major competitions, six of them in the United States Open.
His announcement, made known through the publication ‘Vogue’ during the first days of August and within the framework of the Wimbledon tournament, has generated a shift towards the American event where, in addition to the singles draw, he will be pairing up with his sister Venus in the doubles tournament.
“What Serena (Williams) will do in the tournament is something never seen before because it is not usual for an unseeded player to be in the main hours of the tournament. On the other hand, her focus will be on the doubles tournament where she, along with her sister Venus de Ella, have won 14 Grand Slam tournaments and three Olympic medals”, highlighted Eumar Esaá, a journalist from France 24.
The doubles tournament for the Williams sisters will begin on August 31 when they take on the pairing of Linda Noskova and Lucie Hradecka, both from the Czech Republic. It will be the first time they have met since 2018 when they fell in the round of 16 at Roland Garros.
