The Victoria Plzen is a modest club from the Czech Republic. Founded in 1911, it only came to obtain its first title in 2011 and since then it has become a regular participant in the Champions League.
This year they are playing for the ninth time in the Champions League and, with their 2-1 win against Azerbaijan’s Qarabag, Viktoria Plzen will return to the group stage of the tournament after four years.
A Colombian player participated in this classification, John Edison Mosquera. After winning the Colombian league with Atlético Nacional in 2017-I and after a two-year stint at Deportivo Cali, Mosquera, who is now 32 years old, returned to the Bohemians of the Czech Republic, his home club, then was at Zlovan Liberec and last year he signed with Viktoria Plzen.
In fact, Mosquera has already scored a goal in this edition of the Champions League, to help his team eliminate one of last season’s surprises, the Sheriff of Moldova, who even defeated Real Madrid as a visitor.
Viktoria Plzen, in the ‘group of death’ of the Champions
The draw, however, was not kind to the Czech club. It was in the most difficult group of the tournament, C, along with three clubs that already know what it means to win the Champions League: Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Inter de Milan.
Under normal conditions, a draw as difficult as that would represent at least a headache for the victim of how the ballots were moved. However, in the Czech Republic there was an outburst of joy.
The club revealed a video showing part of the squad watching the group stage draw on television. Located in pot 4, Viktoria Plzen were one of the last to know their rivals. As soon as they saw the group, the demonstrations of joy were immediate.
On their way to the group stage, Viktoria Plzen eliminated Finland’s JHK Helsinki and Sheriff, before facing Qarabag. And why not get excited about something similar to what the Moldovan team did last year?
