According to the head of the Red Bull formula team, the F1 series should protect its historic races.
Some of the biggest names in the formula series are worried that the Belgian Grand Prix might be dropped from the program of the formula 1 series next year.
F1 returns from its summer break to the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit this weekend, but the track’s contract with the series is coming to an end and no new deal has been signed.
“I get sad,” the McLaren driver Lando Norris told reporters on Monday, according to news agency Reuters.
“It must be that everything is about money these days, that’s why this is. This is business, but Spa is a historic race in the F1 series.”
According to Norris, the situation is the same at the Monaco race and Monza.
“I think Spa should be on the calendar as long as the F1 series exists.”
More One of F1’s most popular tracks is in danger of losing its annual races as the sport spreads to the world. The United States is getting a new competition when it’s raced in Las Vegas next year. South Africa are hoping to get their own competition back on the calendar, and the series may return to China if the country’s corona restrictions ever allow.
At the same time as the sport is growing in the world, the leader of Red Bull Christian Horner called on the International Motor Sport Federation to protect the historic races of the F1 series. In addition to Spa, Monaco is without a contract for next year.
“Monaco, Silverstone, Spa and Monza are historic races that should be protected,” Horner told the Express, according to Reuters.
“It’s great that there are new competitions, but history must also be present.”
“What would the ATP tennis tour be without the Wimbledon competition. These races are part of history, part of the sport’s DNA. We make our opinion known, but in the end you have to trust the parties that run the sport’s business.”
