Recently Lewis Hamilton celebrated 300 races in Formula 1 with a second place in the French Grand Prix. With an identity card that indicates 37 years, the seven-time world champion certainly has a few seasons ahead of him, at least if we consider the high-level ones. And, since the Brit does not like to compete for presence, it seems difficult for him to reach 400 races in his career: it would mean having another three and a half seasons, in addition to finishing the current one.
Teased on the issue by team principal Toto Wolff, who believes Hamilton could reach 400 GPs if he wanted to, the Mercedes champion replied: “That’s a lot of races! First of all, I am grateful that I have come to this point. I, however, still feel fresh and I think I still have a lot of gas in my tank. I’m really, really proud and I enjoy coming to work every day and sharing my time with this amazing group of people around me. I like being in Formula 1 more than ever“, These are the words of the British as reported by the Circus website. “There are great people leading the sport, I’m having more fun than ever. Of course I want to go back to winning and it will take some time, but I’m sure sooner or later we will sit at the table with Mercedes and talk about the future“.
Even if he were to continue in Formula 1 after 2023, the year in which Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes expires, the Briton would have a very strong opponent in the longevity rankings in the Circus. This is Fernando Alonso, who is already -3 from Kimi Raikkonen’s GP record. At the end of the year the Spaniard will reach 356 (net of unavailability) and in the next two seasons – when he will be at the helm of Aston Martin – he should easily reach 400.
