About to arrive in Brazil, the heart of Dom Pedro I (known as Dom Pedro IV in Europe) is on display in the noble hall of the Irmandade da Lapa church, in Porto, until Sunday, the 21st. This is the first time that the organ of almost 188 years old can be visited by the public of Portugal.
The exhibition runs until 4pm on Sunday. At night, the heart leaves the Irmandade da Lapa and heads to Brasília, where it arrives on Monday, the 22nd, to join the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Independence of Brazil. Afterwards, the organ will be exposed again and in the same place, on the 10th and 11th of September, when it will be back in Portugal.
The celebrations of the bicentennial of Independence also mark the first time that the heart of D. Pedro I will return to Brazil since the death of the monarch, in 1834. The transport will be made by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and was authorized by Rui Moreira, president of Porto City Council.
The mortal remains of Dom Pedro I, except for the heart, were transferred to São Paulo and buried in the Independence Monument, in Ipiranga, south zone, in 1972. According to Moreira, the heart remained in Porto after a request from the monarch himself.
“King Dom Pedro IV, hours before he died on September 24, 1834, in the Palace of Queluz where he was born, called to his side the Empress Dona Amélia, to whom he expressed the desire that his heart be given to the city of Porto. as proof of recognition for the devoted sacrifices the Portuguese had made. It was decided that this important treasure of the city would be deposited in the Main Chapel of the Church of Lapa, in a sarcophagus protected by five keys,” she said.
Dom Pedro I was born in 1798, in Queluz, but moved to Brazil in 1808 along with the Portuguese royal family. In 1822, he declared Brazil’s independence and became the country’s first emperor. In 1831, he abdicated the throne in favor of his son, Pedro II, and returned to Portugal, where he died three years later.
