Not only Van M., who claims to be innocent, appealed. Justice did too. She had demanded 20 years in prison and found the sentence imposed by the court too low. The appeal should have taken place last June. However, more and more additional studies have caused delays. The court proposes that the hearing of the case needs four days, partly because – again – several witnesses, including an expert, have to be questioned in the courtroom.
The first session day is scheduled for September 29, the last on October 13. The court is expected to take six weeks to reach a decision.
Caroline van Toledo was horribly killed in 2005 after her house was set on fire after a burglary. The woman living alone was gagged and stuffed into the trunk of her car. It was driven to a remote area and set on fire there. Firefighters found her charred body.
The murder caused a great stir. The police did everything they could to solve the notorious Oostvoorn trunk murder, but did not succeed. Everything pointed in the direction of Van M., but justice did not find enough hard evidence against the man and had to release him again.
Thirteen years after the murder, thanks to new research, DNA evidence against Van M. emerged and a witness suddenly reported to the police. Van M. was arrested again and taken into custody.
