Viivi Lehikoinen didn’t have to run the 400 meter heats at all. The rule for sprints and hurdles also receives criticism from him.
Munich
Brave the run flew by Kristiina Halonen to the semi-finals in the 400-meter hurdles at the EC athletics.
Halonen entered the front straight in the lead, but froze at the last fence. He came fourth in his heat when the top three went straight. Halonen was the best in the time trial. He was only two hundredths short of the record of 56.68 he ran at the World Championships.
“I was thinking of going briskly when I had a bad luck of the draw and you have to run hard in the corners. A sharp step contact had to be made in the curves. The final straight was too slow,” said Halonen.
The best time in the time comparison surprised Halonen.
“I was sure that such (56.70) is not enough, but we have to leave home for a year to grow and a year later again,” said Halonen, ready to speak.
Halonen has suffered a lot from injuries. He graduated in the spring with a master’s degree in engineering.
At the World Championships, 24-year-old Halonen was the most unknown athlete in the Finnish team. In Eugene, Halonen’s run went to the plus side, just like now in the European Championships.

Will we see a third good value race run in a row from you in the semifinals?
“I don’t see any obstacles to why not. I trust my own fitness base. I’m not going to the semifinals to be humiliated, I have nothing to lose.”
Finland The number one name for 400 meter hurdles Viivi Lehikoinen reached the EC ranking (eighth) directly to Thursday’s semi-finals.
Although Lehikoinen got an extra day of rest, he does not support the rule used in sprints and hurdles at the European Championships, which exempts the best statistical names from the preliminaries.
“That’s not a good rule. Everyone should be involved from the beginning,” Lehikoinen said.
Formerly sprinters Samuli Samuelsson and Samuel Purola have criticized the same rule.

Tuomas Lehtonen was the last place in the men’s 400 meters hurdles preliminaries in 26th place. His time was 52.75.
During the run, Lehtonen couldn’t catch up to the rhythm of the running at all. Lehtonen has run 51.19 this season. Even in Munich, that would not have brought a further place.
