NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called on Wednesday for the International Atomic Energy Agency to urgently “inspect” the Zaporizhia nuclear plant in Ukraine.
Stoltenberg considered it “urgent” that the agency conduct an “inspection” at the station controlled by Russia, while the strikes and clashes in its vicinity intensified.
Russian forces took control of the largest nuclear plant in Europe in early March. But Ukrainian technicians operate it.
“This constitutes a serious threat to security and increases the risk of a nuclear accident (…) It is urgent to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to conduct an inspection, and to ensure the withdrawal of all Russian forces” from the site, Stoltenberg said during a press conference.
The station has been bombed several times over the past weeks. Russia and Ukraine accused each other of being responsible for targeting it.
