Officer Wang Yunfei: Military planes to escort Pelosi will be a lesson for the US
Sending military aircraft to escort US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will be a lesson to the US. Other methods are listed in article For Global Times, retired Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy officer Wang Yunfei.
At the moment, the officer notes, the most attention both at home and abroad is on what measures China will take, especially in the military field, to protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The US military was reported to be considering sending fighter jets for close air support to protect Pelosi.
According to Wang Yunfei, there are five possible ways to prevent Pelosi from visiting Taiwan. “The first is to send military planes to escort Pelosi’s plane. I agree with this approach. In this way, we can teach the US and the island of Taiwan a harsh strategic lesson,” the officer wrote.
The second way is to establish a no-fly zone in the Taiwan Strait, preventing Pelosi’s plane from landing. In addition, the option of sending military aircraft through the island of Taiwan or launching ballistic missiles in the area of the Taiwan Strait is being considered. Finally, the fifth option is to conduct military exercises.
At the same time, the officer pointed out that all of these methods have a common drawback – they lack the flexibility to eliminate crisis situations. Thus, the likelihood of their use is relatively low.
Earlier, China’s envoy to the UN Zhang Jun warned of the consequences of a possible visit by Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. He stressed that Washington should understand the consequences of such a move, which would undermine relations between China and the United States. At the same time, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken blamed the PRC for possible tension.
