The cabinet is allocating a maximum of 33.1 million euros to relieve the pressure on asylum reception. With the money, security regions can attract extra people who can help at the crisis emergency shelter locations.
That is what Minister Hanke Bruins Slot (Internal Affairs) wrote to the House of Representatives today. The money will be divided among the 25 security regions. The cabinet already promised extra capacity on 1 July, but it is now clear how much money is involved. This is a maximum amount. How much money security regions actually spend partly depends on the number of civil servants that are deployed, according to Bruins Slot.
With the money, each security region can attract a maximum of thirty employees for a period of three months. According to Bruins Slot, this group may include government officials who are temporarily deployed, but also people recruited by employment agencies. A total of 1050 employees would be able to work.
New location
Yesterday it was announced that the cabinet is considering opening a temporary second application center in a barracks of the Ministry of Defense in the short term. This is to relieve Ter Apel. At the new location, asylum seekers should not only find shelter, but also be able to start their asylum procedure. Defense locations in Ede, Budel and Zeist are mentioned as places that are ‘very suitable’.
In a fire letter Today, five aid organizations called on Prime Minister Rutte to take the lead in solving the problems surrounding asylum reception in our country. “We can no longer accept that vulnerable people and children sleep outside in front of the application center,” UNICEF, the UN refugee organization UNHCR, the Dutch Association for Pediatrics, the Red Cross and the Council for Refugees wrote in the letter.
