In a statement, the institution says it expects “free and fair” elections in the country and reaffirms confidence in the Brazilian electoral system
The UK Embassy in Brazil reaffirmed its confidence in the Brazilian electoral system and in the “strength of democracy” in the country, this Thursday (21.Jul.2022). The released note comes in the wake of the president’s speech Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to ambassadors, on Monday (18.Jul.), with criticism of the electronic voting machines and the TSE (Superior Electoral Court).
In the statement, the institution says that the system and the polls have proved to be secure in past elections and have international recognition.for its speed and efficiency”. The delegation stated that it expects “that the entire country is committed to respecting democracy through free and fair elections”, and that Brazil” It has solid and transparent institutions”.
The US Embassy (United States) in Brazil also spoke this week about Bolsonaro’s pronouncement, in defense of the Brazilian electoral system. In a statement on Tuesday (July 19), the Americans stated that the Brazilian electoral process is “model” to other countries. The position was reinforced by US State Department spokesman Ned Price on Wednesday (July 20).
In a meeting with foreign ministers, Bolsonaro criticized the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in addition to the TSE and the country’s election system. As a reaction, members of the opposition presented a crime report against the president in the Supreme Court, and accused the chief executive of inciting a coup in the event of defeat in the elections.
This Thursday (July 21), the president of the TSE, Minister Edson Fachin, gave Bolsonaro a period of 5 days to comment on actions by parties received by the Court, asking for the removal of videos of the presentation on social networks.
Fachin was invited to the event by the president himself, but declined the invitation, justifying that his position as president of the TSE implies “duty of impartiality“. He explained that he cannot participate in events organized by pre-candidates.
After the chief executive’s speech on Monday, the minister said at an event with lawyers that the Electoral Justice had been the target of fake news, without mentioning Bolsonaro. On May 31, Fachin met with ambassadors and warned diplomats about “frivolous information” published about the Brazilian electoral system.
