The two drivers of German nationality currently present in Formula 1 have experienced the Austrian Grand Prix with completely different emotions, both on and off the track: if, on the one hand, Mick Schumacher took his best career position ever in the top flight, crossing the finish line in sixth position and winning the applause of the whole audience, the weekend of the Red Bull Ring has definitely turned its back on Sebastian Vettel.
The four-time world champion, after having even finished last in qualifying on Friday, was not able to stand out in the Sprint and in the Sunday race, thanks to two contacts that took place first with Albon and then with Gasly. In a weekend therefore to be forgotten from a sporting point of view, Vettel then created a case in the pilots meeting held on Friday: the Aston Martin standard bearer has indeed abandoned the meetingnot without a certain nervousness, in the middle of the session, then suffering a (suspended) fine of 25,000 euros for his action.
However, in a succession of controversies over the gesture made by the number 5 – who did not want to comment on the reasons for this decision – there were also drivers who took up the defense of the former Ferrari driver, including his friend and compatriot Mick Schumacher. The latter admitted that he fully understood Vettel’s choice, explaining his point of view to the media in the Spielberg paddock: βIt seemed to me that we were not concluding anything on some of the aspects addressed and that we were basically circling around the problemsβ, Remarked the Haas driver, who achieved the best result of his career in the Austrian Grand Prix (sixth place). “The discussion went on longer than necessary, e I understand Seb’s reaction perfectly. Among other things, I believe that many other riders have also felt the need to abandon the briefing β.
