The former president of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aimé recently explained why Wii U never supported more than one Gamepad. According to the executive, the console was technically capable of this feature, but a small number of owners and the relatively short lifespan of the system helped prevent it from becoming a reality on the platform.
While expectations for the console were high, Wii U quickly turned into a flop for Nintendo as it has sold just under 14 million units since its launch. Poor performance has been attributed to several factors, including marketing marketing and weak launch headline lineup.
“What was interesting is that with Wii U there was a complete development plan for all the interesting interactions and all the interesting capabilities that the system could do.“, Fils-Aimé stressed.”So in that case, could technically more GamePads communicate with a Wii U? The answer was ‘yes’, but the base of people who owned the console was never large enough to make the type of implementation sensible.“.
The reason why dual GamePad support was never implemented on Wii U seems to have been for a number of other factors. Nintendo “didn’t create a game where you needed another GamePad to have a great experience,” said Fils-Aimé. “Development never went on and Wii U’s lifespan was so short it never came true.”
