Former British finance minister Rishi Sunak said on Friday that he would compete to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who announced on Thursday that he would step down.
“Somebody has to seize this moment and make the right decision. That’s why I’m running to be the next Conservative leader and your prime minister,” Sunak said in a video posted to Twitter advertising his candidacy.
Sunak resigned as finance minister on Tuesday, one of two unexpected resignations that set in motion the chain of events that led Johnson to decide to step down.
A party committee will set the rules and schedule for the contest to succeed Johnson.
In his resignation letter, Sunak said it had become clear that his approach to the economy was very different from that of Johnson as they worked to agree on the next steps for Britain.
Sunak reiterated this in announcing his candidacy for the leadership of the Conservative Party.
“The decisions we make today will decide whether the next generation of British people will also have a chance of a better future,” he said.
