Juniors need more coaches than at present, writes HS sports reporter Roosa Laiho.
Two coach and twenty little soccer players. What could go wrong?
Rehearsals begin. Suddenly, at the same time, you have to direct the ongoing practice, organize the positions for the next one, tie the shoelaces of two players and comfort the third one, who is upset and crying on the side of the field.
It seems that there are quite a few things that can go wrong.
I know that from experience, because I coached soccer players aged 6-10 for more than five years. Most of the time there was only one coach besides myself.
Two coaches are not enough.
When it’s about small juniors, this is not sport specific. Children get hurt and it happens outside of actual training, whether it’s soccer, athletics or tennis.
If there are twenty small children in the group, at least two coaches are needed to run the exercises, preferably more.
In addition, it would be good for at least two to have their hands free to take care of the players’ concerns and prepare the next exercises. These can also be handled well by volunteer parents who don’t even have to have a background in sports.
Regrettably often you hardly see a couple of coaches on the field, who have far too much to take care of.
It would be high time to understand that there cannot be too many junior coaches and act accordingly.
