The head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, announced that the military institution will not participate in the political dialogue facilitated by the tripartite mechanism, according to the official Sudanese Sons Agency (SUNA).
The agency said that the step aims “to allow the political and revolutionary forces and other national components to sit down in order to form a government of independent national competencies to complete the requirements of the transitional period.”
Al-Burhan affirmed, in his speech this evening, “Mother of the Sudanese people”, “the commitment of the armed forces to work with all components of the Sudanese people in order to achieve national consensus and consent,” according to the agency.
The tripartite mechanism, made up of the United Nations, the African Union and the Eastern and Central African Development Community (IGAD), is facilitating dialogue.
Al-Burhan added, in a speech broadcast on state television, that after the formation of the executive government, the Sovereignty Council will be dissolved and a Supreme Council of the Armed Forces will be formed to assume the supreme command of the regular forces and be responsible for security and defense tasks and related responsibilities in agreement with the government.
