in Lisbon The UN maritime conference held in Portugal last week ended on Friday.
About 7,000 people attended the conference. The participants were leaders of the member countries, scientists and representatives of non-commercial organizations.
President of France Emmanuel Macron called for legal regulation of deep-sea mining at the conference, reports news agency Reuters.
“This is a turning point for the future of the oceans. Macron has effectively pushed for the end of deep-sea mining”, head of the Deep Sea Conservation Union Sian Owen said.
Environmental organizations demand that the leaders of the member countries must keep their promises.
The World Nature Organization WWF proposed the prompt acceptance and ratification of international agreements to protect marine areas.
“The sea, the climate and coastal communities around the world need progress, not just promises”, CEO of WWF Marco Lambertini said.
The Lisbon meeting was the last political gathering before August, when the member states decide on the protection of the high seas that goes beyond national legislation.
