Some people like to keep the lights on while they sleep, while others go to dim them completely. However, a new study brought difficult news to those with the latter opinion, as Phyllis Zee, head of sleep medicine at Northwestern University School of Medicine, explained that exposure to any amount of light during sleep is associated with serious diseases.
He reported that this habit may cause a higher prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure in elderly men and women.
He added that people should make every effort to avoid or reduce the amount of light they are exposed to during sleep, according to “CNN”.
He also explained that the elderly, who are more likely to develop diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, have the greatest risk, stressing that measuring the amount of light a person is exposed to with a sensor on his body compared to his 24-hour sleep and wakefulness is the focus of the study.
It is noteworthy that Zee was supervising a study on this topic, and it was found that sleeping only one night with a dim light, led to high blood sugar and heart rate in young people during the experiment.
The results also conveyed that a high nighttime heart rate is a risk factor for future heart disease, while high blood sugar levels are a sign of insulin resistance, which can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes.
