At the dawn of 41 years of age, Fernando Alonso managed to amaze everyone, once again, at the qualifying of the last Canadian Grand Prix: the Spanish driver from the Alpine, despite not being at the wheel of a car that can compete openly for the victory, made full use of his talent for conquering the first row in Montreal, on a track made treacherous by rain and wet asphalt conditions.
Regardless of the 9th place obtained in the race, which was also the result of a suboptimal performance of the power unit and a penalty suffered in the post-GP, the bi-world champion still impressed in the fight for pole position, missed only for the masterful performance by Max Verstappen. The return to the front row after ten years, at the same time, increased the regrets for what would have been the Iberian’s palmarès without some decisions or contrasts with the teams for which he ran. Specifically, the tensions generated with the McLaren during the 2007 world championship, especially with his then teammate Lewis Hamilton – on his F1 debut – or again in 2014, when he bitterly left the Ferrari to return to McLaren, only to then touch one of his lowest moments in F1 due to the lack of competitiveness of the vehicle.
A mix of talent and strong personality that has not gone unnoticed in his long career, including to another world champion like Nico Rosberg. The German, champion in 2016, in fact admitted his esteem for Alonso’s qualities at the wheel, while noting some regret for his tendency to generate a climate of conflict within the teams for which he played: “Sometimes he lacked social competence – explained to the program ‘Any Driven Monday’ from Sky – he often had a hard time being part of the best teams with the best cars because they didn’t want him anymore due to the burnt bridges in the past. This has certainly been one of his weaknesses in his career. But in terms of talent he definitely is one of the best of all time. It’s really cool that he still manages to drive this way. I felt very sorry for him in Canada, I wanted him to be on the podium, and I think Alpine made a small mistake. He’s driving so amazingly that it shouldn’t be argued that he’s taking someone’s place. He deserves to be in his place. The way he is riding is spectacular, fans from all over the world love him and he is a great asset to Alpine. “
