Russia’s attack on Ukraine keeps Russian and Belarusian athletes out of classic marathon races.
The Russians and Belarusian skiers will not be allowed to take part in the most prestigious competitions on long-distance ski trips as long as the war of aggression against Ukraine is going on.
According to the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang (VG), which published on Sunday, the news was reported by the Norwegian news agency NTB.
The closure of Russian and Belarusian athletes has been confirmed by the ski series Ski Classics, which focuses on marathon races. Its classic competitions include the Norwegian Birkebeinerrennet, the Swedish Vasaloppet and the Italian Marcialonga.
At its weekend meeting, Worldloppet, a partner in the series, adopted a statement supporting the continuation of the closure.
“This also applies to March next year and will remain in place until the war is settled,” says Birkebeinerrennet, a Norwegian director. Eirik Torbjørnsen confirmed to NTB.
Torbjørnsen is also a member of the Board of Ski Classics.
