It is a very busy period for Razer: the American manufacturer is always busy keeping its catalog updated with new products or re-editions of the old ones. The infamous “versions 2” that take up the most successful products of the snake company and propose them with aesthetic and technological updates according to the evolution of components, software, and aesthetics.
So there remain the two side buttons that if in a shooter like Call of Duty they are the minimum union, in a complex game like Escape from Tarkov or even the Battlefield series (Moba and MMORPG we don’t even talk about it) make us regret sophisticated solutions like the splendid Naga Pro https://www.eurogamer.it/razer-naga-pro-recensione But in that case we were talking about a real mouse transformer awarded with an Essential sticker (the only one in the history of Eurogamer Hardware) designed for meet any need while the Viper V2 Pro is an extremely specific solution.
But let’s go back to the Razer Viper V2 Pro: it is a double-capacity mouse, that is, it can be used wirelessly thanks to the supplied dongle, or wired, by connecting the Razer’s Speedflex cable that performs the charging process, bringing the overall autonomy. about eighty hours in duration. In the package there is also the docking for the dongle itself and the cable, about a meter and a half long that can be used as a real cable for the Viper V2 if you do not want to use it wirelessly.
The mouse is almost identical to its predecessor and in terms of keys it is the most barebones you can imagine: only the two main keys plus the activation of the wheel on the back and two side keys within reach of the left thumb. Although the mouse is perfectly symmetrical in shape, it is a product designed specifically for right-handed users as a left-handed would risk accidentally activating the two internal function keys with the palm of the hand. In the lower part there is an abundant Teflon-coated pin that surrounds the sensor the ignition button embedded to the right of the sensor itself.
The shape is therefore nothing particularly innovative: it is the classic Razer mouse of standard size in terms of length and width, not excessively rounded or flat: the ideal compromise for palm grippers therefore, as Razer has accustomed us to this for a long time. part, with the exception of particular products such as the Nagas which, by virtue of the numeric keypad to be housed on the outside, have a decidedly more rounded and curved shape at the top.
Despite the overall standard dimensions, as soon as you pick up the Viper V2 Pro you will notice the incredible lightness of the whole device which reaches just 64 grams, 9 less than the Viper V1. And Razer, on the official product page, explains in great detail where it went to save, specifying every single aspect of the slimming treatment where it focused. We therefore discover that the removal of the keys on the right side allowed to recover 2.9 grams as well as 2.7 grams for the RGB Chroma as well as 3.2 grams for the removal of the rubber grips that in the previous model were on the side left and right. As a replacement, inside the package there are adhesive fabric grips that can be applied or not at will.
Through other structural optimizations, we arrive at about sixteen grams less than the V1: we are talking about really minimal weights that in the past we have seen in other mice but of much smaller dimensions than this one. In this sense, we understand Razer’s goal: the challenge was not only to reduce the weight to the bone but above all to maintain the typical dimensions of a palm gripper mouse without excessively reducing the dimensions by changing the target of users.
Going to see the technical specifications of the sensor, we have now reached such stratospheric levels of DPI that one wonders if it still makes sense to go even higher. Already mice in the optics of 15-20000 DPI have reached an infinitesimal precision and it becomes difficult to perceive the improvements compared to high-end sensors even for the Focus Pro 30K which, as you can guess from the name, allows you to reach a value of 30,000. Simply off the charts for even the most phenomenal hisenser. In any case, if absolute precision is already guaranteed at significantly more human levels (from 1000 to 3000 DPI) there are also in this field a whole series of improvements that make a further leap in quality.
For low sensers who often lift the mouse to reposition, it goes from 3 to 16 settable values of asymmetric cut-off. The recognition of the surface on which you are using the mouse has also been improved, optimized for glass fundamentalists. Finally, the mouse retains Motion Sync functionality to match your PC’s speed in recording inputs simultaneously with your PC. The signal transmission speed features remain unchanged through Razer’s Hyperspeed technology which already in the previous model saw an input lag of about a millisecond, making the use in wireless mode practically indistinguishable from that of a wired unit.
Within Razer Synapse the mouse is automatically configured when you make the first connection whether wired or wireless, with a fully automatic installation in both modes. The customization of the keys is quite simple also considering the low number of possible activations: in the tab relating to the performance you go into more detail since they are completely customizable up to five levels of sensitivity at will with a separate configuration of the X axis and the Y plus three pooling rate values (125, 500, 1000). The settings are closed by the calibration based on the surface with the detachment point we talked about earlier, with the possibility of asymmetrical adjustment and energy saving adjustments after a certain period of inactivity and the low power mode when it falls below a certain battery threshold.
In everyday use we liked this Razer Viper V2 Pro a lot: it is clear that for such a product the working context does not make much sense since its potential is hidden in the quality of the sensor and in the stratospheric lightness. However, it is also true that for a user who stays at the PC all day and is used to heavier mice, the paradigm shift is radical to the point that it is not so easy to go back.
We then put the Viper V2 Pro to the test with Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Escape from Tarkov and even a top-down shooter like Alien Swarm where, if not played with the pad, the accuracy of the crosshair rotation is essential to survive the hordes of enemies. The Viper V2 Pro always performed flawlessly with absolutely total precision in every situation. Coming from a heavier mouse (the Naga V2) it took some getting used to but within a few days holding it in your hand became absolutely natural.
If lightness and precision are absolute merits with few rivals as regards gaming mice in this category, it is also right to talk about some defects, essentially linked to Razer’s design choices devoted to the uncompromising slimming of the mouse itself. The first concerns the function keys which are very few, especially if we consider that it is not possible to cycle on the fly between the various sensitivity steps and it is necessary to set the pressure of the wheel to activate this useful feature for those who snip.
The other two aspects that have not fully convinced us concern the adhesive grips present in the package: we have not tried them but we have the feeling that in intense use, perhaps during summer sessions, they will tend to deteriorate and come unstuck from the body. Finally, the speeflex cable included in the package is braided, but it is lighter than usual (and you understand why) and tends to tangle in an annoying way. In the past Razer has dedicated itself to this solution with more consistent and problem-free variants and even in this case it probably would have been appropriate to give something more to robustness at the expense of weight, especially since the use in wireless, with its eighty hours of Razer certified duration (we have reached a good seventy before having to recharge) of the cable you do not feel the need.
Details that do not unduly affect the overall evaluation, but it was necessary to specify their presence, considering the level of this product and above all the fact that it is aimed at a specific niche of the market. In conclusion, we can say that this Razer Viper V2 Pro successfully continues its mission towards total lightness for those users who make it an essential requirement for reasons of precision and comfort. It will certainly not be the most desired mouse for those who want to have many options at their fingertips, but for all the others it is undoubtedly a very high level product that with the right apprenticeship period can become a playmate for a long time to come.
The price? Always quite high but speaking of Razer it is now clear its nature as a premium product that does not lead to much breakdown when the price tag is 150 euros. Always quite high, but it is now clear that snake products are paid not only for build quality and software engineering, but also for the brand they carry.
