About 48 million voters were called to vote in light of the heat wave in France, but the abstention is expected to be as large as what happened in the first round, according to opinion polls.
Polling stations open at 6:00 am GMT and close at 16:00 GMT, with the exception of major cities, where the deadline has been extended until 18:00 GMT, with the first estimates starting to appear successively.
The competition in this election is fierce, but the exact distribution of seats in the National Assembly and thus whether or not Macron will obtain an absolute majority will not be clear until well into the evening.
Macron said that the war in Ukraine affects the daily lives of the French, stressing the need for “a truly European France that can speak with a clear and frank voice.”
At the same time, he waved the scarecrow of “extremists” who, if they won, would provoke “chaos” in France, accusing them of wanting to get the country out of Europe.
If he obtains a relative majority in the second round, Macron will have to seek the support of other political groups.
