The Monaco Grand Prix 2022 renewed the curse of Charles Leclerc in his home race, with the victory or the conquest of a podium that still remains a dream for the Ferrari driver: the fact remains that, as happened in 2021, the Monegasque had opened the weekend with the fastest lap in qualifying, which earned him his 14th career pole position. On Sunday, however, the strategic disaster at Ferrari materialized, which proved fatal for a potential climb to the top step of the podium.
A place, the latter, where historically the prizes are awarded to the first three classified by the members of the Monegasque Princely Family, and which this year has written small pieces of history, starting with the success of Sergio Perez. For the Mexican from Red Bull, in fact, it was the first victory in career in Monte Carlo, the third in F1 after the one obtained in 2021 on another street circuit like that of Baku – which is also the venue for the next GP between 10 and 12 June – and that of 2020 in Bahrain, then in Racing Point. Consequently, for Perez, the one in the Principality was the second success with the Milton Keynes team, in turn very close to a big step forward in its history. Thanks to this milestone, the Anglo-Austrian house has in fact secured itself the eightieth victory in Formula 1, thirteen years after the first joy signed in 2009 with Sebastian Vettel in China. In the event that Red Bull also triumphs in Baku, it would equal the number of victories obtained by Lotus, becoming the fifth most successful team of all time.
Finally, he is also very close to a particular record Carlos Sainz. The Ferrari driver, thanks to his 2nd place in Monaco, has in fact reached the 10th career podium, the eighth with the Maranello team after the first two in McLaren between 2019 and 2020. In this way, the Spaniard equaled two other Ferrari drivers such as Maurice Trintignant and Tony Brooks in the all-time classification, as well as a former recent history driver like Romain Grosjean. Curiously, in the event of another podium, Sainz would reach two other ‘reds’ such as Chris Amon and Patrick Tambay, in addition to the Italian Jarno Trulli, but that’s not all: in these 10 overall podiums, the Iberian has never tasted the taste of victory. If this trend were to remain the same, the 27-year-old from Madrid would risk equalizing the absolute record of Nick Heidfeld, holder of the highest number of podiums winless: 13.
