Finland and Sweden negotiated with Turkey on their NATO membership in Ankara on Wednesday.
Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan says that NATO talks with Finland and Sweden were not at the “expected level” and that the country cannot say yes to applications from “pro-terrorism” countries. Turkish broadcaster TRT Haber said this on Sunday, according to the news agency Reuters.
“As long as Tayyip Erdoğan is the head of the Republic of Turkey, we really can’t say‘ yes ’to countries that support terrorism joining NATO,” Erdoğan told Reuters.
Finland and Sweden negotiated NATO membership with Turkey on Wednesday. Discussions took place in the Turkish capital, Ankara.
In advance, Finland did not expect a breakthrough from the negotiations, but a stage in a process that could last for weeks.

Adviser to the Office of the President of Turkey İbrahim Kalın said on Wednesday that during the talks, Turkey called on Sweden and Finland to take concrete action against organizations that Turkey considers to be terrorist groups and a security threat to its country.
In addition to the Labor Party PKK, the groups include the Kurdish organization YPG and the Syrian Kurdish Party PYD.
Turkey has opposed Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership and called on Sweden, for example, to stop supporting the PKK. The country has accused Sweden of funding and arming the PKK, which Sweden has denied.
In addition, Turkey has, for example, demanded that Sweden and Finland extradite a number of individuals it considers to be terrorists.

President Erdoğan has repeatedly threatened not to accept Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership.
Foreign minister Pekka Haavisto (Green) met with the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Last week in Washington on a trip related to Finland’s NATO application.
