Some papaya orange was missing in qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix. There McLaren takes a small step back from Imolaplacing Lando Norris in eighth position and Daniel Ricciardo only in the seventh row, 14th. Yet the conditions with respect to free practice seem to have been more or less respected, even if the British driver could have aspired to something more considering a time in Q3 that was lower than that of Q2 (which instead brought him to third position).
“I am overall happy with how it went – has explained Norris – I think we’re in a decent position, and I don’t think we could have achieved much more. The car wasn’t quite the way we wanted it, and I don’t feel like I have brought out its full potential. This explains how difficult this qualifying was, but I think it was a bit complex for everyone, I made a mistake on my last lap in Q3 which apparently cost me a couple of positions. So I can’t be very happy, but I know it could have been much worse“.
Much blacker mood for Ricciardowith a small pit problem similar to Sainz’s in Australia which in fact compromised the passage in Q3: “The session started well in Q1 and we managed to make some good improvements to the car. I felt good and I had the feeling of being able to move up different positions compared to free practice, but in Q2 there were several setbacks. In the first lap I lost a lot of time in the second sector and I knew I had to correct the shot for the decisive run. Before going out again though, we had a problem in the garage with starting the car, wasting a lot of time. This compromised the out-lap and therefore also affected the lap. We had such bad luck that it cost us Q3. Now we hope to get a better result in the race, hoping that the wheel will turn a little more towards our side this time ”.
