Ukraine war: Putin’s troops attack Ukraine – attention is on Mariupol
First report: Munich – In the Ukraine war, bitter fighting between the troops of Russian ruler Vladimir Putin and the Ukrainian army continues. For a long time, the capital Kyiv was the scene of the fiercest fighting. But now the war has shifted to eastern Ukraine. Russia is aiming for a complete capture of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, which are currently partially occupied by pro-Russian separatists.
The Ukrainian port city of Mariupol in particular has been the main target of Russian troops for several weeks. The city was attacked with weapons from the ground and from the air until it was almost completely destroyed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously described the situation in the city as “difficult”. Finally, Mariupol could no longer withstand the heavy Russian attacks: Putin declared the city conquered. However, the Ukrainian defense has not yet been completely expelled from Mariupol.
Ukraine War: Mariupol attacks continue – air raids and street fighting around Azovstal plant
Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians are currently holed up in the “Azovstal” steelworks in the south-east of the city. After the Russians took Mariupol, the head of the Kremlin gave Putin the order not to storm the steelworks because he didn’t think it was necessary. At the same time, however, he called on his troops to completely besiege the area so that “no flies can escape”. Nevertheless, there were attacks on the plant. On Monday (April 25) Russia announced a ceasefire in the area.
According to Ukrainian information, however, the situation has not calmed down and the Russian attacks have not ended. “Airstrikes on Azovstal are not abating,” adviser to the Mariupol mayor Petro Andryushchenko informed Telegram. Despite the numerous statements, Russian troops would try “again and again” to storm the steelworks. In addition, street fighting around the Azovstal plant would also continue.

According to the Mariupol City Council, “the conditions are terrible” at the steel mill. In a message to Telegram, the Ukrainian authorities stressed that at least 2,000 soldiers and civilians, including women, children and the elderly, were staying at the Azovstal plant.
According to the city council, there are no means of medical care at the plant, while the situation regarding water and food is also grim. “There are many wounded in unclean and terrible conditions. Without medicine. The water and food situation is catastrophic,” the city council said in a statement. The authority called for the soldiers and civilians entrenched in the plant to be rescued “immediately”.
At the same time, the city council published photos from the steelworks. The footage shows the wounded lying on stretchers on the ground in unsterile conditions. “Terrible photos, but the world should know what’s happening,” the city council wrote about the pictures from the Azov steel plant. (bb)
