Aron Canet was leading the Moto2 race at the Portuguese Grand Prix, in which he started from pole position, when suddenly the rain began to fall on the Portimao circuit, triggering a carom that involved nine riders at turn 2. The most affected was the Valencian of the FlexBox HP 40 team, who suffered a fracture of his left hand, for which he had to undergo surgery.
As reported by the Sito Pons team, the Spaniard left for Barcelona on Sunday afternoon, and this Monday he successfully underwent surgery on the intra-articular fracture of the distal epiphysis of the left radius.
The operation was performed by Dr. Xavier Mir and his team, who performed percutaneous reduction and internal fixation with compression screws. The FlexBox HP 40 pilot will stay in hospital for 24 hours at Dexeus University Hospital and will begin physiotherapy in 48 hours.
According to the release, it will be the recovery period that will determine Canet’s participation in the Spanish Grand Prix, which will take place this weekend at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit.
For the Valencian rider, the Portimao crash was the second consecutive crash while he was leading the race, as the same thing happened to him a fortnight ago in Austin. Which caused him a significant drop in the general classification, in which he is now fifth with 49 points, 41 points behind the leader Celestino Vietti. Canet will try to keep his chances of fighting for the championship by taking part in this weekend’s race, otherwise the third consecutive zero could have a heavy impact on his chances.
